Your Comprehensive Guide to Youth Sports

We all agree that sports can be such a great part of children’s lives, helping them learn so many unique skills – physical, mental, social – but trying to navigate the world of youth sports can be confusing, time-consuming, and overwhelming.

Long before they’re able to decide for themselves, their exposure to and participation in youth sports rests on your shoulders. You want to be sure you’re doing the right thing for your child but the sports information landscape makes it difficult to feel like you are.

That’s why Youth Sports Navigator is your comprehensive guide to all things youth sports. Through assessments and one-on-one consultation, we work to understand the needs of both you and your child. We help you find the right sport as well as navigate the entire process of their participation and success.

What sport is right for my child? What age should we register for sports? How do I register my child? Should we pursue recreational or competitive? My child is shy. Is team sports a good idea? How many sports are too many?

what to expect

Who is this for?

Seriously, this is for so many of you out there. Let me give you a few examples and we’ll see if you nod your head to any of these!

  • Are classes titled “Parent and Me” really necessary? I am really not “in to” the participation side of my kid’s activities?

  • I need to talk through my kid’s schedule with someone. My partner works a lot and asked me to take care of it.

  • How many sports are too many sports?  My kids currently have one or two activities each night, but I promise they like all of them!

  • I want my child to be well-rounded, so we try a lot of new things. If they decide after a lesson or two that they don’t like an activity, I allow them to quit. Is that OK?

  • My child is 9 years old, and their coach does not want them to play any other sports. I was told, “It is time to specialize and focus on one sport.”

FOUNDER

Betsy Maxfield

My name is Betsy—no, I am not an Elizabeth! Not many of us out there. I was born and raised in Iowa and had a pretty awesome childhood—full of love and support and unfortunately, some losses too! (But this is the stuff that shapes us and maybe teaches us some GRIT, as well.)

I grew up trying most sports and every type of dance—I could do “run, run, lunges” in my sleep! My mom was a chauffeur driver from 3:30–7 p.m. almost nightly. In high school I played five sports, some better than others, and around 11th grade really focused on one sport: soccer.
